Telling Time in Elementary Math

Telling time is an essential math skill that helps young learners read both digital and analog clocks, understand the progression of hours and minutes, and apply this knowledge to daily routines like following a schedule or planning activities. Tools such as an interactive clock provide hands-on practice that makes learning more engaging.

Why is it Important?

Learning how to tell time equips children with a lifelong skill. It helps them manage routines, gain independence, and develop responsibility. Time skills also connect to other math areas, such as fractions and skip-counting, reinforcing overall number sense.

Strategies for Teaching Time

  1. Start with Prerequisites: Students should be able to count to 60 and understand that a clock face is a circle divided into halves and quarters. A foundation in fractions helps too.
  2. Introduce the Clock: Begin with an analog clock. Point out the numbers 1–12, then explain the hour hand (short) and the minute hand (long).
  3. Teach Full Hours First: When the minute hand points to 12, students learn it’s “o’clock.” Practice this until they are fluent.
  4. Move to Half and Quarter Hours: Show how the minute hand at 6 is half past, while 3 and 9 represent quarter past or quarter to.
  5. Introduce Minutes: Each number on the clock equals five minutes; each tick mark is one minute. Practice by setting different times.
  6. Teach Digital Time: Match analog times with digital clocks. Start with hours, then move to half/quarter hours, and finally individual minutes.

Classroom Activities

  • DIY Paper Clock: Students make their own practice clock with paper plates and movable hands.
  • Time Games: Play “What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?” or use an online time practice game for extra engagement.
  • Daily Routines: Have students map out their day (e.g., “7:00 – Wake up, 8:00 – School starts”) to connect math with real life.
  • Elapsed Time: Use a classroom timer to measure activities. Ask students to predict how much time has passed before checking.
